Rotary Railcar Dumpers

Richmond Engineering Works (REW) offers complete state-of-the-art Rotary Car Dumpers (also known as Wagon Tipplers) for unit train or random car operation. Our dumpers are designed for loaded gondola cars weighing up to 315,000 lbs. and can achieve 3500 TPH with a 35 to 45 second cycle time. Our designs are innovative, maintenance friendly, and include the latest technical advances. REW offers turnkey installations by subcontracting a team for complete system integration. 

Our dumpers can be configured with options such as rack and pinion drives, chain drives, hydraulic clamps or gravity mechanical clamp systems. We design our dumpers with our customers’ needs first, creating maintenance friendly systems, access walkways, and inspection tie-off points to help reduce maintenance down time, raise production, and increase safety.

Features and Upgrades may Include:
Hydraulically Operated Clamping System with breakaway clamp heads and improved design for easier maintenance and cylinder removal.

Quick Change Dual Equalized Trunnion Assembly, US Patent No. 10,364,107 B2, allowing fast change-out of trunnion wheel and bearing, minimizing machine downtime.

Rack Lock Assembly providing an easy and safe way of securing the dumper for maintenance.

Return Bumper Stop with shock absorbing hydraulic buffers incorporated to minimize impact from any unexpected over travel condition.

  • Dumper Drive Conversion from NEMA D two-speed or DC motors to new regenerative VFD speed control with new area classified motors and brakes.

  • AC Thruster with automatic pad adjusters. Replacement Parts Upgrades to replace DC brakes.

  • PLC Control System to replace the old electro-mechanical relays and timers. This will increase system throughput and assist in system diagnostics via trending and remote monitoring.

  • Upgrade to new Digital DC Drives for haulage, positioner arm, or holding arm.

  • New Redundant Hydraulic Power Units for car clamps, wheel clamps, or truck locks.
  • Encoders / Position Lasers for dumper, positioner or holding arm, and positioner carriage. This will allow better and safer speed and positioning control of the equipment and help prevent crashes.

  • Video Systems for monitoring positioner arm and holding arm (to verify train spotting before lowering arm). Also to check the top of railcars prior to dumping.

  • High hopper-level monitoring with Radar or Laser Sensors. This will prevent dumping in the event of high hopper levels and avoid damage to the dumper and railcars.
  • Replacement of Mechanical Switches on the car clamps with magnetic ‘GO’ proximity switches.

  • Photoelectric Sensor Array to prevent unauthorized entry while the car and engine are moving.
New / Replacement Dumper Cabs and Operator Chairs with arm-mounted dumper controls.
HMI Systems which will give the plant and the operator better control of the rotary car dumper and the ability to monitor the condition of the machine and / or other PLC control systems, i.e., conveyors, stackers, reclaimers, storage and bunkers.

New Dumper Rear Access Platform on the return side which allows easy access to maintain the electric and hydraulic systems even if a car is on the dumper.

Air Operated Retarder Systems for random car operation with maintenance friendly replaceable shoes.
